American Autogard - Power and Transmission Couplings and Torque Limiters

Autogard Series WT

Quality and Autogard are synonymous with overload protection. The company’s reputation for high quality products is derived from over 35 years of design innovation and production. Autogard products are manufactured to meet ISO 9001 using the latest machine tools and high quality materials.

American Autogard - Power and Transmission Couplings and Torque Limiters

The Ultra Module is used to build a torque limiter by fitting a hardened seat into one half of a coupling and the module unit into the other in such a way that torque is transmitted between the drive ball and seat. This produces an end thrust in the plunger in proportion to the applied torque. This force is resisted by a ring of balls trapped between a flat surface and a conical washer loaded by disc springs. When the axial force reaches a level greater than the reaction through the spring mechanism, the ball and plunger will retract forcing the balls up the plunger slope and allowing the ball to disengage from the seat. The balls are then located on the larger diameter of the plunger and all forces are balanced internally allowing the torque limiter to run free and unloaded.

The trip torque is externally adjustable and is achieved by turning the adjustor to increase or decrease the spring pressure. Resetting is accomplished by simply aligning the two halves, positioning the ball over its seat, and tapping the reset pin with a soft hammer. Automatic reset versions are also available.

Ultra Module units may incorporate an optional limit switch plate, which moves on trip and can operate a switch to stop the drive.

Disengaged

Manual Disengagement is achieved by clockwise rotation of the disengagement sleeve. This feature disconnects the drive and can be a useful tool for equipment setup maintenance, and can also be used as a replacement for standard jaw clutches.

Features and Benefits

• Stainless Steel construction to withstand harsh working environments
• Accurate and consistent torque setting including a vernier scale on each module to allow consistent and accurate torque adjustment
• Instant and complete disengagement of drive and driveline inertia for optimum protection
• Adjustable (in-place) torque setting to match the actual load requirements
• Provides automatic motor shutdown, or an alarm signal by accommodating proximity sensors or standard limit switches if the optional sensor plate is used
• Quick and easy reset using alignment markers manually reset with a soft hammer
• Manual disengage standard allows for the unit to be disconnected for testing, replaces the need for a separate jaw clutch
• Low maintenance integral grease fittings allow periodic lubrication of the unit without removing it from the drive

Manual disengagement sleeve can be used to disengage the module, without affecting the torque setting. By simply rotating the sleeve back to its original position and hitting the reset pin with a soft hammer, the unit is once again fully operational.

Series WT Torque Limiter Selection

Method

Example

Data required for Torque Limiter Selection.
• Horsepower and rpm of the drive, including reductions.
• Downstream equipment limitations (ie. maximum chain pull, flight capacity, etc.)
• Shaft details of the driving and driven equipment.
• Drive Medium details.

(1) Determine the maximum Torque (in. lbs.) based upon
equipment limitations, (chain pull)

Select the Torque Limiter, which has a higher
torque rating.

(2)

Check the Limiting Conditions:

(a) Check the hub bore capacity is suitable
(b) Check the Torque Limiter dimensions such as
overall length and outside diameters.

(3) Select and specify appropriate drive medium.
All Autogard Series WT units may be supplied from the
factory at a pre-set torque and with required Drive Medium assembled to the unit.

Longitudinal collector tank, being driven by 1/2 HP motor operating at 1750 RPM via a gear reducer with a ratio of 1800:1.

• Customer confirms that maximum allowable chain pull is equivalent to 6,500 in. lbs. at the reducer output shaft.
• Reducer output shaft diameter is 1.50 inches.

Series WT Selection based upon chain rating: WT-1 with 2 Low Torque modules.

WT-1 Bore Capacity: 1.750 inches
The WT-1 with 2 Low Torque modules is acceptable in this application.

Ordering the Series WT Torque Limiter

When ordering please provide the following designation:

Model - Size / Modules / Bore
Example: WT - 1 / 2LT / 1.500

Refers to a Series WT size 1 Torque Limiter with 2 Low Torque Modules and a bore size of 1.500 inches.

Also specify
• Torque setting if required
• Limit switch plate option, if required.
