Overload
protection is an essential tool for the production manager. An ever
increasing number of companies appreciate its value to ensure the
highest level of productivity. Production can take several forms,
including simple shear pins, friction devices, electronic monitoring
units and torque limiters which have proved to be the most reliable and
effective forms of safeguard, giving instant protection and complete
disengagement in the event of a jam.
With the 800 series
module Autogard has extended torque limitation into the heavy duty
sector of industry while retaining cost efficiency and reliability.
The Ultra Module offers a cost effective
solution to overload protection where heavy
torque demands and large shafts make conventional torque limiters
expensive and impractical and space
limitations allow little more than the drive train components.

Ultra
Modules provide:- |
• |
A
versatile solution - The system is easily built into standard
couplings, sprockets, gears, pulleys etc. |
• |
Quick
and easy reset - Simply realign the modules with their
seatings and tap the reset plungers with a soft hammer. A
unique automatic reset option for slow speed applications is
available. |
• |
Adjustable
torque settings - Tripping torque can be easily adjusted to
ensure optimal protection of the machinery without removing
the modules. |
• |
Consistent
release torques - The set torque will not change once the
Ultra Module has been set. Modules are not subject to fatigue
as are shear pins, or the torque variations inherent in
friction clutches. |
• |
Manual
disengaging facility - Non automatic reset modules may be
manually disengaged by clockwise rotation of the hexagonal
headed disengaging sleeve A/F2
~ ref. table opposite. |
• |
Limit
switch operation - Disengagement of both radial and axial
designs can be detected by a limit switch. Axially mounted
modules have the option to incorporate a limit switch
operating plate. |
• |
Easy
relubrication - Each module is fitted with a grease nipple to
facilitate lubrication of the torque transmission components
within the unit. |
• |
Customer
design service - Ohio Belting and Autogard, with nearly thirty
years experience of modular design torque limiters, provides a
complete design and manufacturing service to supply ready to
fit clutches, tailored to your application. |
Operation
The Ultra
Module is used to build a torque limiter by fitting a hardened seat into
one half of a coupling and the module unit into the other in such a way
that the torque is transmitted between the plunger and the seat. This
produces an end thrust in the plunger in proportion to the applied torque.
This force is resisted by a ring of balls trapped between flat and conical
washers loaded by disc springs. When the axial force reaches a level
greater than the reaction through the spring mechanism the plunger will
retract forcing the balls up the plunger slope allowing it to disengage
from the seat. The balls are then located on the larger diameter of the
plunger and all forces are balanced internally allowing the torque limiter
to run free and unloaded.
Resetting is achieved by simply aligning the two halves of the coupling in
order to position the plunger over its seat and tapping the reset plunger
with a soft hammer. This will cause the plunger to move forward allowing
the balls to return to their original positions. Units can be supplied
with synchronous reset and, for slow speed applications, automatic reset
version are available.
Torque adjustment is facilitated by simply rotating the hexagonal nut to
either increase or decrease spring pressure. Once set, a calibration
spacer may be fitted to discourage unauthorized increased torque setting
adjustment. Three set screws lock the adjusting nut.
Manual disengagement is achieved by clockwise rotation of the
disengagement sleeve which provides a useful aid during plant set up and
maintenance, where drive disengagement is of benefit.
